Radio Licence.

Post by bobholiday »

I've got my VHF operator's licence, and have just bought my first yacht - which already has a non-DSC VHF installed.

What do I need to do?

I think I need to register the unit on the boat, is that it? Or something else also required?

Thanks,

Strictly speaking, it's the yacht that needs to be registered, with a list of all radio equipment (vhf, epirb, radar, handheld and possibly other things). There used to be an annual charge but now it's free. You can start the process from the Ofcom website http://www.ofcom.org.uk/licensing/olc/ but i've heard it's a pig of a site to navigate.
If it is already registered then you should renew that registration, but in your name. You would need to find the call sign, typically 4 letters and a digit, first letter M.
