9th July 2010 - Bomb Disposal + Dover Departure Prep

Post by Jeff »

Some preparatory research has been necessary for our next hop - partly due to the fact that for no apparent reason, we are not allowed to enter Ramsgate with a dog on the boat - even if she doesn't leave the boat. We could go to France - but not Ramsgate :P

So this means we have another 45 miler to do in a day - similar in length to our hop from Eastbourne to Dover - except this time the passage is peppered with crab and lobster pots, involves going in more than one direction for the whole way and has some considerable hazards to watch out for in the form of very shallow water. We're also forced to make half of it against a pretty strong current (1.5 knots) which will slow us down.

To aid departure at a specific time to make the most of the tide, we really need to leave Dover harbour at precisely 08:30 tomorrow, so we're leaving the confines of the marina, going through the swing bridge and lock, and spending the night anchored in the main outer harbour - unsheltered from the wash of the constant ferry traffic - hopefully we'll get some sleep. Can't be much worse than the marina has been for the last 2 hours though! We were politely asked to leave our boat because someone had left a metal box on the pontoon near us. We then had to sit in the sun while about 10 police people showed up, followed by the bomb disposal squad. After a long delay and a loud bang as they blew up some poor person's camera equipment, we're now back aboard preparing for departure.
