7th Jan 2010 - A Cold New Year!

Post by Jeff »

Wow it's cold! We had -6C on deck the other night! It's now -4C with a clear sky, and it's 5PM - I think tonight might be the coldest yet!

Fortunately, although the Vapalux pressure lamp is still out of action pending the arrival of spare parts, the Eberspacher is now working perfectly again, so we're toasty warm in the cabin during the day. At night we switch off the heating, open the hatches some more (for ventilation and condensation avoidance) and use the power of thick sleeping bags and duvets. Sometimes, if she's been good, Lunar is allowed to join us in the morning (see pic below).

Christmas was spent in Yorkshire with our families. I wasn't happy being away from the boat for such a long time (2 weeks) so was glad to get back a couple of days ago after an epic drive down from North Yorks in blizzards and ice.

And the snow and ice seem to have followed us down. Yesterday, Devon was closed due to heavy snow. Our tenant in our flat near Crediton reported frozen pipes. Unheard of conditions for Southern UK... well, for a few decades at least.

PS. Pontoons are extremely slippery when icy! Rose did a cartoon "legs in the air to bum plant" the other night and is still limping as a result.

Here's some recent photos:
