DSC a requirement for marine VHF now?

Discuss anything to do with safety, technical aspects of yachts and engineering, and anything else to do with yachts and yachting in here.

DSC a requirement for marine VHF now?

Post by bobholiday »

I've bought a yacht with a VHF set that doesn't have DSC... but it's relatively new and in fully working order, so I'm not keen to buy a replacement.

I'm not overly keen on DSC anyway - the alarms going off all the time annoy me.

But do you HAVE to have DSC now?

Hi Bob, no you don't have to have a DSC VHF radio fitted. But as you say when your radio packs up you can upgrade to a DSC one; unless you can pick up a second hand one cheap, apparently marine electrical/electronic engineers often have them which they have removed from boats which they have upgraded.
