Mackeral size? Ovefishing?

When we used to cruise around the Firth of Clyde in the 1980/1990s, we could rely upon catching mackeral from our yacht to provide us breakfast, lunch or dinner whenever we wished in the Summer. Our logs from those days record amount and size. We returned to the area this year, and although mackeral...

Yes, sitting in the marina in Largs with a beer, the events seem rather funnier than at the time! We are insured, but I suspect the excess will make it not worth claiming for - I'm currently pursuing Zodiac via the dealer who says it's the second case of broken rowlocks on a new Zodiac this year... ...

Should have taken your advice, Jeff! We were persuaded to "invest" in a Zodiac Cadet 260, and to be fair it did a good job of ferrying us and the dogs from anchor to shore. Until yesterday At Brodick, rather than mounting the engine I chose to row to shore in a force 3-4 – just before arri...

Folding Bikes

We've been looking for a pair of folding bikes to keep on our Bav 30 - something we promised ourselves to purchase as soon as we upgraded from our previous boat, a semaster Sailor 19ft pocket cruiser (!) Having looked at a large number of options including cheap'n'cheerful from Halfords et al, Bicke...

Boat tool kit - what to take?

OK. Always been a WD40 and hammer kind of guy, but here goes: What would make a decent toolkit for a medium sized yacht? I've got (as well as aforementioned hammer and WD40) rechargeable drill, bits, a small socket set, a "multihead" type screwdriver, pliers and a mole grip. Oh, and lots o...

Garmin GPSMAP 172C - can I buy charts?

My New-to-Me Bav 30 has a Garmin GPSMAP 172C. It wasn't on the inventory, so I was pleasantly surprised. However, there is no useable-to-me chart installed (Southend on Sea yes, West Coast Scotland no!) I've searched the Garmin site to no avail - it just tells me te product is discontinued and that ...

Hi Terry, Hope your plans come off - we're moving our new Bav up to Largs as I write. Great sailing memories - we were last there for a couple of seasons in the early 90s. Rob: lots of submarine stories too! My favourite was when I had an inexperienced friend helming my tiny Seamaster sailor whilst ...

Wow, Jeff: that sounds like a deal! The Achilles was sold to us a "poor man's Avon" - also Hypalon, and 20+ years seems to have justified its description! I suspect that the more available and cheaper PVC boats would fall foul of the dogs' claws...
