My boat has a clinometer with a long list of credits:

I'm mystified that so many people, including one very illustrious scientist, wanted to get involved in a spirit level. What do you think?

That is pretty odd

Didn't realise how simple it was until closer inspection just now.

One thought though is that maybe the names are for patenter, manufacturer - possibly for the mechanism (if you can call a bubble in a tube a mechanism), but also possibly for the all important weatherproof brass housing and glass frontage, without which the tube with a bubble in would be doomed
