The Clinometer mystery

My boat has a clinometer with a long list of credits:

I'm mystified that so many people, including one very illustrious scientist, wanted to get involved in a spirit level. What do you think?

That is pretty odd :P

Didn't realise how simple it was until closer inspection just now.

One thought though is that maybe the names are for patenter, manufacturer - possibly for the mechanism (if you can call a bubble in a tube a mechanism), but also possibly for the all important weatherproof brass housing and glass frontage, without which the tube with a bubble in would be doomed :P
